Big Pond, Small Fish.

Nothing, except that Alf was an honest working-class man who was true to his political views, no matter how reprehensible they appeared to be to others. Middle-class soi-disant socialists are another thing entirely. Especially when they have spent nearly all their adult life in academia rather than get a real job.

Amusingly, this Alf lookalike once poked scorn at working-class ex-pat culture on the island of Symi whilst simultaneously pretending to be a champion of the lower orders in the shit-hole that is Caledonia. However, he justified that on the grounds that those he excoriated were English who did not share the allegedly noble Celtic traits which he claims for himself and admires so much in his compatriots.

Needless to say, the victims of this diatribe responded that the accusations levelled at them were inaccurate, unbalanced and anecdotal. They also claimed that the author was a regular and heavy drinker, offensively argumentative, mentally sick and a bigot. Apparently he had even indulged in the violent pastime of brawling. Naturally the ex-pats of Symi claim that he is not welcome back there and that they are not the only inhabitants of the island to feel that way. It was also alleged that they were going to sue the author for his calumnies, even though he was apparently skulking in new Zealand at the time.

Perhaps that's why Dr Sean Damer has moved back to his beloved shit-hole Glasgow and currently is living at G/2, 15 Garrioch Quadrant, Glasgow, G20 8RT; he can be contacted on 0141 561 7838.

What a bitter, nasty and innacurate rant this is.

Sean Damer's report on Symi was an excellent piece of ethnography and was honest and accurate. I know it really does annoy British people that any other British person should dare criticise their deeply unpleasant, bigoted, xenophobic, bitchy, money-grasping, alcohol-riddled so-called "community" on Symi, but Damer said it how he saw it, and he was far more academically qualified than you or any Brits on Symi to make those comments. Good for him too. Your diversion into Caledonia bears no relation whatsoever to Symi; of course he can think differently about Caledonians and a bunch of horrendous British infesting a lovely Greek island. Like all those Symi-based Brits who so complained about Damer, all you do is point out that you didn't like his style, or his personal politics (which dont feature in his writing), or his drinking habits. None of you have ever discussed the truth of what he has written, and that's because you can't; as Damer got it right.

Your publishing of his address and telephone number seems little less than harrassment. There's nothing worse than somebody like you, who thinks they're clever with attempts to use big words, but who falls way short of their own estimation of themselves.

"What a bitter, nasty and innacurate rant this is" - I take it you are referring to your own response.

"...an excellent piece of ethnography and was honest and accurate" - Guffaw, you wouldn't recognise excellence , honesty or accuracy if they were a pack of dogs that bit you in the arse.

"..deeply unpleasant, bigoted, xenophobic, bitchy, money-grasping, alcohol-riddled..." - You must be referring to the original author.

"...he was far more academically qualified than you or any Brits on Symi..." - And you are in a position to know that, NOT!

"Your diversion into Caledonia bears no relation whatsoever to Symi..." - Yet it was Damer who initiated the comparison by criticising the expats precisely for not sharing certain attributes he implied were uniquely Celtic, so you can direct your misplaced criticism at him, not me.

"...all you do is point out that you didn't like his style..." - Once more you accuse me of something I am not guilty of, for I made no comment about his style.

"...or his personal politics (which dont (sic) feature in his writing)" - Oh yes they do, but then I doubt that you have read much of them.

"None of you have ever discussed the truth of what he has written, and that's because you can't; as Damer got it right." - Again untrue, for it is on record that his report is "inaccurate, unbalanced and anecdotal".

"Your publishing of his address and telephone number seems little less than harrassment(sic)." - Since you cannot even spell the word, it is unsurprising that you demonstrate your unfamiliarity with what constitutes harassment. Besides, the man himself has made this information freely available on the web, and invited contact, so my reciting it here accounts for nothing.

"There's nothing worse than somebody like you, who thinks they're clever with attempts to use big words..." - What big words did I use that you are unfamiliar with, except those of more than one syllable?

"...but who falls way short of their own estimation of themselves." - Yet another unsupported (and untrue)allegation by you, but then your comment demonstrates similar characteristics to those levelled at the original report, namely it is "inaccurate, unbalanced and anecdotal".

"Thank you for proving all of my points about you." - What you meant to say is that you lost the argument, but then you must be accustomed to that state of affairs.

Strange, however, that you felt the need to continually return here to witness your humiliation - BTW, trying to hide your IP address when you visit here doesn't work.

Bye bye.

You've really not been disagreed with much in your life, have you? I understand that it's hard for you, you have my sympathy.

"You've really not been disagreed with much in your life, have you?" - Correct, but that's because I am invariably right, unlike yourself.

"I understand that it's hard for you,..." - I doubt that you understand very much at all.

"...you have my sympathy." - Thank you for your misplaced generosity, but I suggest that you reserve your sympathy for yourself as life must be extremely difficult for someone who has demonstrated such puny intellectual skills as you have.
